Charles and Ray Eames

A few weeks ago I watched an interesting documentary about Charles & Ray Eames on PBS – Eames: The Architect & The Painter. The documentary is currently being streamed on the PBS website,  and it is also available on iPad app for PBS.

Charles and Ray Eames brought a major contribution to modern architecture and furniture. They had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to fulfill the practical needs of ordinary people and bring greater simplicity and pleasure to our lives. Combining imagination and thought, art and science, Charles and Ray Eames created some of the most influential expressions of 20th century design: furniture that remains stylish, fresh and functional today.  The Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman, which is in continuous production since 1956, is one of the most coveted items of furniture even today. The Molded Plywood Lounge Chair, designed for Herman Miller, was hailed by Time magazine as the Best Design of the 20th Century.

For those interested in mid-century modern design, watching this documentary is the best way to spend 85 minutes, if you have them.
